Win2000 Pro requires what trick to initialize COM1 with LabVIEW 6i?

While attempting to communicate with my binary device through COM1 in LabVIEW 6i, I received error "-1073807246" and message "Property Node (arg1) in Serial Read w/Timeout.vi" with the fault occuring in the Serial Port Init.vi. Using a vendor-supplied executable, communications were established, within that program. What else can I try to establish communications?

Look at the serial primer in zone.ni.com ; something there is likely to
help you.
