I had LabVIEW 2009 SP1 and LabVIEW 8.6 installed on my computer. I then uninstalled LabVIEW 8.6 and now the files with extensions .vi and .lvproj do not have their snazzy labview icons. Its now the default windows explorer icon for files w/o an extension. The files still open in LabVIEW 2009 SP1. I didn't think it would bother me, but now as I'm looking at some project folders with lots of files it does bother me because it makes it more difficult to identify what a file is.
Anyway to fix this without doing a reinstall?

Did you try opening an explorer window, select folder options, file types, select the VI extension, then press the advanced button, select change icon and browse to the LabVIEW 2009 executable file?
