wondering how to access registers on a modem chip using labVIEW with a serial(RS232) interface to the modem. all i want to do is read and write to a few registers.

Have you looked into using the "AT" commands
RX
or
SX
(this is from memory, so please forgive if wrong).
These commands have been around for a long time and any modem that supports the AT command set should include these commands.
