Thats like asking how to build a car with metal. We need more information.

To start-
1. Photodiode
2. Photoresistor
3. Photovoltaic Cell (Solar cell)
4. Light emitting diodes can also be used
5. Phototransistor
6. CCD or CMOS elements (typically linear or array formats for cameras)
7. Eyeball
....

I've always been partial to the venerable photomultiplier tube myself.

You called me out on that one, I have even used them too, quirky little high voltage beasts. Which reminds me:
-Avalanche Photodiode.
Would a picture of a plant have enhanced light sensitivity?
