best chair

ah! not being able to try out chairs will make it more difficult! I agree it is a lot like buying a bed, everyone has their own idea of what is comfortable. I unfortunately can't give you any good suggestions for chairs, I am currently sitting on cheap - back ruining variety. Im also sorry if I offended anyone, it was not my intention, I saw a humorous picture of a chair and could not resist firing off a pun.

Good luck on your hunt for a comfortable chair! And for what its worth, I agree with K C, while there obviously has to be some balance (i.e dont go and buy a $3000 chair with a built in back massager (even though that would be awesome)) more expensive chairs will tend to be better designed and last longer, allowing your back to stay better designed and last longer!

Its tricky to know the line between a rubbish (but expensive) chair and a reasonably priced (but ergonomically excellent) one, especially as I have always been on the receving end of pretty low end models until now.

A while back I was reading a thread on some forum about chairs (and other comforts) that the best developers (not LabVIEW, probably C or java) use, and all agreed that it so important.

Check out the comments on chairs at Joel On Software (near the bottom of the page). He is a big fan of the expensive Herman Miller Aeron chairs. As an RSI victim, I can vouch for what a good chair does for you (not to mention keyboard tray, trackball etc.). Proper positioning is key and a good chair allows you to do this. You will want a good keyboard tray to go with it.

I do pine for one of those chairs, but once you have taken exchange rate into account they cost $1500 in the UK!!!!!
