How do I reconfigure the FTP server running on a cFP-2000? For security purposes, our IT people want us to get rid of the anonymous FTP login, or to disable the FTP server entirely. I need to create user/password permissions. A thread in 2004 discussed options, but nothing seems to work.  Thanks

Hi,

I found a knowlegebase which has the information you are looking for: How Can I Change the Password for the FTP Server on My FP-20xx? Please let me know if you continue to run into problems with this.

Hal L.,

Thanks for the pointer. I had already seen that solution, but the functions of FieldPoint Explorer were rolled into Measurement & Automation Explorer from version 4.0, and I can't find any corresponding functions in MAX.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

I think the information you are looking for is located in the MAX Help. Once in MAX, go to Help >> Installed Products >> Measurement and Automation Explorer Help for FieldPoint >> Configuring Comm Resources >> Configuring Access Control For FieldPoint Ethernet Network Modules. Please let me know if you have further questions or if this is not the information you are looking for.

Hal L.,

Thanks again for the reply. It might help if I explain what we want to do, and what we've done.

I have locked the cFP-2000 controllers through MAX, and access control works as advertised for both confiugration and FTP access (If someone FTPs to the controller without using the password, they are denied read, write, and delete access.) But the fact that there is anonymous FTP access rankles our IT people. They're concerned that the cFP-2000 can be used to bounce attacks off the FTP server onto other servers on our LAN.

So what I need to do is to disable the anonymous FTP login capability, and institute user/password security. Some other documentation alludes to this possibility ("if security access is activated") but I haven't been able to find any procedure to do so.

Thanks again for you help.

David

Hi David,

Are you just wanting one computer to access this FieldPoint unit or are there multiple users? If you only have a single user, then you could use the serial connection or a crossover cable and avoid the network entirely. With that being said, I have never heard of anyone attacking an FTP server through a FieldPoint unit, so your IT department really has no need to worry there. Also, I have been searching for the documentation that you are referring to, but I cannot find it. If the above solutions are not feasible, could you give me more information about the documentation you found?

Hal L.

Hal L.,

The document I'm referring to is at http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/40547e70c64dc19686256de100168196. In the section LabVIEW Real-Time Graphical File Transfer Utility there is the line "At this point, you will be prom...

Hi David,

As I said before, I believe that your IT people are being overly cautious in this case and you can always simply use a crossover cable to communicate with your FieldPoint system, thus avoiding the network altogether.

However, I believe that you can disable the FTP server by changing the name of "ftpserve.dll" to "ftpserve.bak" on the target system. However, I do not think this is necessary. Setting password permissions prevents anonymous access to the Target system. When I tested this funcationality, I was unable to even login to the Target system.
