computer vision

Hello everyone,

I have a project where i have to detect plastic types using computer vision and a neural network. Any help how to start ?

Research how you'd use the neural network to determine differences in types of plastic.

Until you understand that, nobody can help you with the LabVIEW aspect.  That's what these forums are meant to help with.

Thank you 🙂

I am currently researching about neural networks , but my question is can i implement it using Lab View?

That answer really comes down to "it depends."

Once you understand nueral networks, you'll need to take a look at the sensors.  Sensors don't all communicate in the same way.  Are you going to be working with USB, Serial, NI data acquisition, etc?  Have you been to ni.com/idnet to see if there are already third party drivers built or will you need to handle all of the communications on your own?

What licenses do you have for LabVIEW?  I'd imagine you'd want to look at the Visual modules if you're wanting to do something graphically intensive.  Do you have access to these?

If it's using a sensor, I'd imagine it COULD be implemented in LabVIEW.  That doesn't always mean it will be easy.  You still need to provide a great deal more information before anyone can REALLY offer you any substance.

I have a professional license.

my idea is to use a camera as a USB and recoginze the pattern of diffeernt types of plastics using lab view.

thank you for your answer

When I asked about licenses, I was referring to something like: https://www.ni.com/en-us/shop/product/vision-development-module.html

That generally makes it easier to interface with vision applications.  If you're wanting to go with straight serial commands, you probably want to take a look through the idnet to find a camera that has third party drivers so you can communicate with it easier.  Otherwise, you'll need to figure out all of the commands required to acquire data from the camera as you'd like.  Check out the USB examples in the LabVIEW "Find Examples" section under Help.  It'll give you an idea as to what you're looking to get yourself into.

You sound like you don't have much experience with this.  Don't feel bad we were all beginners once.  Because of this I'd recommend looking into your options, like purchasing the vision toolkit software.  The vision toolkit isn't cheap, but you can download a trial and play with it for a while to see if it can do what you need.

Your local NI sales rep would be glad to help you get started and likely can discuss some of your options with you.  Vision is an art form, with lighting being a major issue.  If you don't have a controlled environment it will be very difficult for you do get what you need.  I'd also recommend maybe talking to an allicance member that has done vision before.
