crelf's Technology Articles

Hi All,

I've created a new semi-monthly technology blog with articles for Test and Measurement engineers. Blogging has increased dramatically over the last couple of years, and subsequently, the number of blogs started with good intentions and then left to die has also risen. That's one reason why this isn't intended to be a blog per se, but more a collection of my technology articles - aimed squarely at the engineer or scientist in the Test and Measurement industry.

Some of these articles have been published before, others are collections of smaller articles, but all strive to introduce an engineering concept and give enough information to stimulate interest and thought in a particular area, or expose an emerging technology to the Test and Measurement industry at large. Hopefully, everyone will be able to get something from my technology articles, from an introduction to a new technology, confirmation of existing concepts, or just a good read to find out what's going on in Test and Measurement.

You're more than welcome to subscribe to the articles if you're looking for a semi-monthly engineering information injection.  To read the articles, subscribe using your RSS reader here:

Data Validity - Are Your Numbers Legit?
Whilst the emergence of data acquisition technology has substantially changed the way we do business, often overall system designs invalidate the calibration and data paths at lower levels. This month we look at the process of getting valid data right up the measurement chain - from sensor to disk.  Read more...

PACs versus PLCs - What are the Real Differences?
There's been a lot of excitement over the last decade regarding the death of the PLC, and the emergence of its replacement: the PAC. Is it really worthwhile making the switch? This month we debunk the myths and see how they stack up - head to head.  Read more...

Deterministic Data Acquisition and Control with Real-Time - Part 2

Building on last month's introduction to RT, let's explore how systems retain determinism and what can derail it, including the process of task scheduling, multitasking and the pitfalls of including asynchronous components into a real time system. Read more...

Rising Technologies: What to Look Forward to in 2007/2008

This month I'd like to introduce some of the technologies we think are going to make a big splash this year: LXI, TEDS and PXIExpress. Over the next few posts I'll look at some of these technologies in depth, but pay attention - I predict that you'll see some of these technologies on production lines, lab benches and end-of-line testers very soon. User Interface Design - More than just a pretty face…

Systems engineers are often buried deep in the technology that makes a system functional, and the design of a user interface is often left to the last minute. The user interface (UI) of a system is the main way a user will interact with your system, so it deserves better than that. Several LAVA members have been talking about UI design recently, so I figured it was a good time to cover the basics. Over the next couple of months we will look at why a well designed UI is important, and some of the simple tricks that the pros use to make sure that your user's experience isn't a negative one. Read more...

LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation (LXI)

I wrote about LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation (LXI) in a previous blog post, and, due to popular demand, here's a more comprehensive introduction to the technology. The uptake of the new LXI standard has been motoring along in some areas, yet not in others. This month we take look at what the LXI standard is, what instruments exist and how you can apply it in your systems.  Read more...

User Interface Design 2 - Elemental Layout

Last month we looked at why User Interface (UI) design is an important step in giving your user a positive and intuitive experience, and this month we'll check out some of the elements that you can use to make it happen. Designing an appropriate UI is not as difficult as it sounds - it's a process of balance, knowing your system and knowing your audience.  Read more...

NI-Week 2007 - What's Hot!

For those who've been living on another planet for a few decades, every year, process, test and measurement engineers get together in the sweltering summer in the middle of Texas to wander the halls of the overly air-conditioned Austin Convention Center. NI-Week is a National Instruments sponsored event that brings engineers from all over the world to attend seminars, expos and closed-door side sessions to not just learn about what's on the horizon, but also help shape the future of our industry as a whole. This year, I joined almost 2,500 industry-expert engineers and scientists to see what's coming. Read more...

An Interview with Stephen Mercer - NI Senior Software Engineer

I sat down with Stephen Mercer at NI-Week 2007 in August. Stephen has been with National Instruments (NI) for seven years, and is currently a Senior Software Engineer and, more specifically, the Lead Developer of the native Object Oriented core introduced in LabVIEW 8.20, and expanded in LabVIEW 8.5.  Although not quite a technical article, I hope you enjoy this change of pace and learn a little about what motivates one of the important figures in the LabVIEW world.  Read more...
