how do i create a sub vi

Creating a subvi's is just like creating a vi.
Chapter 2 of the LabVIEW User Manual gives some valuable info on that.
Another option is to select the code you want to "sub-vi". Select under "edit" "create subvi" and voila, your subvi.

If your creating one from parts of a diagram, just drag a rectangle to
enclose what you want, uner FILE select create sub-vi.
Else, just write it as any vi and use it in another vi.

Make a new Vi (your subVi), go to the Hierarchy window, drag your new Vi into the diagram of your main Vi. Link it by right-clicking the icon in the top right corner of the front panel, choose "show connector." Click on the fields and link them. You might need to right click the subVi icon in the main Vi and choose "Relink to subVi" if you change the connectors.
