how to use DAQ ?

Hi,

I'm using LabVIEW 7.1 and 2 NI-DAQ cards. When trying to opening the DAQ
Assistant VI, LV is looking for sub-VIs (Create DAQ tasks, etc...) and
can't find them. The weird thing is that I can create DAQ tasks when
hitting the configuration button in the LV openning window. I can't
figure out what to do.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers,

John.

Hi John,

This appears like a faulty installation of either LabVIEW or NI-DAQ or both. What version of NI-DAQ driver are you using? Also, did you install LabVIEW before installing the NI-DAQ driver?

Hi Ankita,

I'm using LabView 7.1 and the latest NI-DAQ version. I installed
LabView, then the DAQ utilities, the the drivers for the cards. How come
I'm able to create tasks in LabView (configuration menu in the LV
openning window) but I can't have the DAQ icons in LabView ? Also I
can't open VI's created on another computer that use the DAQ assistant.
Finally I can not open daq-related VIs provided by NI (DAQ Assistant VI
for instance) because Sub-VIs are missing...

Thanks,

John.

Sounds to me like you have NI-DAQ driver installed (including the DAQ Assistant) but not the LV-DAQ support files installed. This is a separate option in the installer. If you installed LV first, the driver installation should have recognized that you had LV installed and by default select to install the LV-DAQ support files into your LV direcotry. The LV directory path is obtained from the registry, so if for any reason you moved the LV installed directory or changed it's name between the time that you installed LV and the time you installed the drivers, the LV-DAQ support files will have been installed in a different location than your current LV directory.
To install these missing files into your LV directory try this:
(I don't have the driver
CD in front of me so my steps/terminology may be slightly off, but I think this is enough info to navigate the installation wizard.)
Insert the Driver CD that shipped with LV.
Select custom configuration.
In the tree of install options verify that LV 7.1 support is selected under DAQmx. Also verify what LV directory the LV 7.1 support files will be added to by clicking on the LV 7.1 Support Files line and noting the path displayed in the install path field in the wizard. It should be the same as where you installed LV 7.1.
Then click Install.

Hope this gets things corrected for you!

Oh, and in specific answer to your question:
> How come I'm able to create tasks in LabView (configuration menu in the LV openning window) but I can't have the DAQ icons in LabView ?

This is because LV is verifying the existance of MAX and NI-DAQ when deciding to show the configuration menu in the LV opening window. This menu item doesn't require any LV-DAQ support files to exist in the LV directory. This is one reason why I say that it sounds like you have the DAQ driver installed, but are missing the LV-DAQ support files (the icons/menus, vi.lib subVIs, etc).
