Is it correct that the labview 8.6 DVD installer platform download (one "half" of which is inexplicably 7.2 GB with the other "half" at 625 MB) requires the use a dual layer DVD drive? I can't imagine that this could possibly be true.

There are a couple of free tools available that lets you mount an ISO file as a vrtual DVD drive. This means you don't need to burn a DVD at all.
I have used the one mentioned here. What is your OS?
You can also use 7-zip (free) to access the iso content.

That's a good point. On the other hand, there's no good reason to break the installer into an itsy bitsy piece and a giant piece that won't fit onto a standard DVD is there? I mean, c'mon! What were they thinking?

<parody, not to be taken seriously>
Supercomputer that makes LabVIEW maze programs: $96 0000
LabVIEW 8.6 development system: $4000
Having to tell your boss the supercomputer is useless as it doesnt have a $20 four year old dual layer DVD rom: priceless!
There are some things that money cannot buy, for everything else there is Mastercard.

Seriously though, it would be sweet if I could get LV 8.6 on an enormous, reel to reel magnetic tape. Or paper punch cards. Either one, really.

Sorry, I don't have any paper punch cards handy, but I have started to write out the contents of the DVD on papyrus in binary for you. If you let me know your postal address I will send it to you.
You can easily enter it into your computer with this system I have in mind (see attached picture). I should be finished quite soon.

Quite right, tst. I don't suppose there is any way to edit my previous post at this point to include credit to Randall Munroe, author of the renowned web comic xkcd is there?
