launch subvi in background on RT target

I would like to run a subvi in the background on a RIO RT target.  I have done this in the past on local PCs using references and nodes but not on RT RIO target.  I need the vi to run in the background and pass data to the main vi running on the RIO RT target using shared variables.  Any ideas on how to launch the vi from the RT target?
