I'm having this intermittent problem. About a 3rd of the time when I shutdown the PC, I get a lktsrv.exe or niLxiDiscovery.exe could not read instruction error. Searching through NI forums, I see it may be related to mismatched device drivers and LV versions. I'm using LV 9, to maintain compatibility within our lab, and the error doesn't seem to affect shutdowns. I'm also attaching a MAX report. Can somebody help me with this? Thanks.

Hi Bill2@NGC,
I see from your MAX report that you are running on a Windows XP operating system. The error that is occurring could be connected with the NI mDNSResponder service. This is an error that has occurred in the past with XP. I recommend disabling this service. In order to do this go to Start » Run.... Tell it to open services.msc Once you do this, scoll down to the NI mDNSResponder service. Right-click and select Properties. Go to the General tab and under the Startup type drop-down menu, select Disabled. Run your computer with this setup for a couple of days to see if the error occurs again. Hopefully, this will take care of the issue you are facing. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Thomas,
I will try that and get back to you, but what do I lose by disabling mDNSResponder? Thanks.

Hi Bill,
The mDNSResponder is connected with the LXI Discovery Service and with announcing new services on your network. Because of this, when installing new hardware and software you might need to enable mDNSResponder to be able to detect them and use them properly for the first time. I am not aware of any other issues that it could cause. However, this is a fairly well documented solution to the errors you are reporting. I hope this is helpful.

Hey Thomas,
I disabled it, but when I shut it down, it happened again, niLxiDiscovery.exe error. The service status was disabled, but I didn't check to see if the process was still running. Is it something else causing it? Thanks.

Hi Bill,
For now, I would try restarting the computer, keeping the service disabled, and ensuring that it is not running during your next shut down. In the mean time, I will continue to research other solutions in case that does not take care of the issue.

Hi Thomas,
I shut it down 8 times and the error occurred 3 times. The service is still disabled and I don't see it running in the Task Manager. There is Lxi mDNSresponder service running though. Is it related? I couldn't kill it.
Thanks.

Hi Bill,
Before we start shutting down the rest of your National Instruments related services, I might have to explore a couple of other options. The next thing I would do is try to repair LabVIEW. If you do not know how to do this, the two images below provide a little guidance. If that does not work, we may try an uninstallation and reinstallation of LabVIEW, but hopefully that will not be necessary. Please keep me updated on your progress. I hope this helps.

When I try to make the repair, it asks for NI PXI Platform Services 3.0.4. But I'm using LV 2009 with NI PXI Platform Services 2.5.3. I may have installed the 3.0.4 version with the PXI cards when I installed them. Could this be the problem? Anyway the repair can't complete because I have the older NI PXI Platform Services. Should I uninstall LV and reinstall it all?

Hi Bill,
Installing the 3.0.4 driver with the PXI cards you have probably is causing the repair difficulties we are facing, but is likely unrelated to the shutdown errors we are seeing. As can be shown here, LabVIEW 2009 does not support the PXI Platform Services 3.0.4 (unless you are running LabVIEW 2009 RT SP1), though it clearly does support the PXI Platform Services 2.5.3. But since the 3.0.4 services are not associated with the LabVIEW 2009 installation CDs, it cannot find the services for the repair. Given this issue, it is probably best to uninstall and reinstall LabVIEW. Please keep me updated on your progress.
