Yeah it was meant to be a joke.  The Simpsons is a popular T.V. show that's been running for about 25 years.  As a result the topics they have mentioned range from just about all aspects of life.  One of which was about how the old grandpa didn't like changing units.  I think he was being forced to use the metric system or something.  That is where that line I quoted came from.
