need some enlightening

I am thinking about a problem. It is not a hard one, but it is beyond my
nowadays ability. The question is:

Can we detect the existence of a GPIB board only using labview while the
board has not been connected to any external device?

I thought the answer might be negative. But I really hope I can get a
positive one. If you thought I can achieve this, could you please do me a
favor and enlighten me somewhat? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

There maybe a way, I could try on different PC's I have here to see what error
messages we get with and without boards. I usually use utilities which come
with the board to detect if they are working correct on a install level. Please
indicate what hardware you are using to help us to help you!

Henry,

Thanks for your help.

I am using a Dell with windows 2000. The board I have is a NI-made PCI-GPIB
board. By far, this is the only info
about my system I know.

Maybe you can use "Easy VISA Find Resources.vi" Search "All Devices" and
see if any of the devices are of the sort "GPIB::#::Instr"

I don't know if this will work. It might only find open VISA sessions.

Fan:

With the currently shipping version of VISA, the answer is no you can't
detect GPIB controller boards. But with the new version of NI-VISA 2.5
(in beta and about to release really soon) you can do a Find Resources
with "GPIB?*INTFC" and it will return all GPIB interface resources
(controller boards), whether or not any devices are connected.
