project window, folders off project root

Starting to move to LabVIEW 8.0  First off the project explorer windows exhibits some odd behaviour.
First, I can create a folder off of the project root, but can not add anything to it.  Under My computer (which I assume is a target) yes, but not off of the project root.  Documentation is very sparse here.

Second, I do not get an option to add a new target to the project.  Not sure what is going on here.  The only option I get when I right click and select new is 'folder'

Third, and apart from the project window, when I go to options and select security, I get a broken VI error after it has to go hunting for missing VIs.  I am missing entire sub-directories that should have been installed.  Is this a bum installation from the upgrade site?  Anyone know?  My disks still have not shown up for the upgrade, but I am off in new directions and thought this would be a good time to upgrade.

Thanks,

Paul

Hello,

1. Yes, I have confirmed that indeed you can add a folder under the project root, but you cannot add anything to it (except for another folder).  If you attempt to add a target, it will be added at the targets level, not within the folder.  However, if you add a device, such as a fieldpoint device, it will be placed in the folder.

2.  I have attached a screenshot of a right-click on a project root - I do have the option to add "Targets and Devices..."  Perhaps a reinstall is in order if indeed you see something different, at least as a first attempt at reconciliation.

3. If your Tools -> Options... -> Security selection fails, then something is surely wrong.  I  have not heard anything about the installation at the upgrade site, but I will inquire about this immediately.  In the mean time, if you can manage a reinstall (if only just for sanity) and repost results, I would very much appreciate it!

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Hello,

My first sentence in the previous post was premature, and may have been misleading... it should have ended, "but you cannot add a target to it."

Sorry for any confusion.

What is the point of adding a folder if you can not add anything to it?  I will try reinstalling.  This is very time consuming so, the first thing I would like to do is find out when my SSP will be here.  If more than a few days, I will reinstall with what I have, as I am still missing many toolkits.  Fortunately, the CAN and NI Switch toolkits were available which allows me to access most of my hardware.

Hi Paul,

In LabVIEW 8.0

1) You are correct in that a second-level folder (underneath the Project node) does not allow you to directly add VIs or other files.  Only targets and I/O devices (i.e. PDA targets, RT targets, devices with network I/O support) can be directly added to a second-level folder.  Put differently, folders directly under the Project node are used to organize targets and I/O devices and not files.  The My Computer target is "special" and cannot be moved into a second-level folder.

2) Certain modules (i.e. PDA, RT, etc) give you the capability to create new targets (other than the My Computer target).  Also, certain hardware provides support for network I/O.  Without these modules and/or hardware drivers, you will not have the option to create new "Targets and Devices".

2.5)  Combining the first two points, it is safe to say that folders directly under the Project node serve no purpose unless you have the ability to create PDA targets, RT targets, or network I/O devices.

3)  To reiterate what JLS said, if going to Tools -> Options... -> Security yields a broken VI error, then something is surely wrong.  I would first try repairing LabVIEW.  If that does not solve the issue, I would try un/reinstalling LabVIEW.  Hopefully this will take care of the problem, but if not, make sure to contact support (or reply back here) so we can take further action.

Take care,
Travis H.

The repair function seem to clear the broken VI problems.  I still do not get an option to create a new target, only a new folder.

Paul,

As mentioned in my previous post, certain modules (i.e. PDA, RT, etc) and hardware drivers give you the capability to create new targets.  Without these modules and/or hardware drivers, you will not have the option (it won't even be visible) to create new "Targets and Devices".  This is correct behavior.

Travis

PS:  For example, I don't have any of these modules or hardware drivers on my machine, and thus I do not have the option to create a new Target or Device (see pic attached).  I assume this is also your situation.  Again, this is desired and correct behavior.
