right select reference crash

Hi,
I have had Labview 7.0 start carashing on me. To cut the story short, the behaviour is exactly as in a preivious post
i.e. <http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=93898&requireLogin=False>
The right-clicking on subVI or references & their associated wiring, no error log & so on are exactly the same in my case.

I should mention that the problem appeared immediately after I had a set of Microsoft updates installed. The IT guys here don't know what was contained in the updates, just that they were the standard updates.

The previous post does mention a possible solution, but one you cannot give on the forum. How was Jon Wilsons problem resolved & could you post me the solution please.

Many thanks,
Kevin Giles.

I had experienced LV crash for no reason in the earlier days of Windoze-XP (SP1).  These occurred immediately after an automatic upgrade.  No changes and no explanation.  Back then, I simply reverted to a previous XP state (removed the upgrades) and it solved the issue.

We pinpointed the issue to an automatic upgrade because a co-worker had the same issue (at the same time) on another PC, to which he re-installed XP.

Since SP-2, I have not seen any unusual crashes while using XP and LV7.0, LV7.1 or LV8.2.

What I mean by unusual is starting LV and it simply dies, repeatedly...  Which was the behavior back then.

Our workaround was to turn OFF the automatic upgrades...  The PC was not used for Internet Browsing, so turning it OFF was better than having unpredictable behavior. 😉

I forgot to ask>  Which OS are you using and what Service Pack (if MS)?  Did this occur using a recent upgrade?

Hi Joe,

Re> Which OS are you using and what Service Pack (if MS)?  Did this occur using a recent upgrade?
XP Pro & Service Pack 2.  The upgrade occurred on Friday 5th Jan.

Thanks,

Hi Kevin,

Did the crash start occurring immediately after the upgrade?  If so, were patches installed one after the other to bring SP1 to a certain level before upgrading to SP2 or was SP-2 installed in one shot?

Hi,
Problem seems to have been fixed.  Uninstalled Labview, searched and cleane out National Instruments & Labview from registry, then reinstallation.

Many thanks, guys,

Hi Joe,
As said in my previous post, the problen has been fixed. However, since posting I noticed your last post and thought to answer in case it may help understand what happened. So here is my answer though I'm afraid it is probably of little help.

Re> Did the crash start occurring immediately after the upgrade?  If so, were patches installed one after the other to bring SP1 to a certain level before upgrading to SP2 or was SP-2 installed in one shot?
The crash did appear to start immediately after the upgrade, though I cannot say for sure as there was a gap between upgrading and using Labview.
I cannot say how SP2 was installed. The machine was inflicted on me, ready setup, in mid-December as part of a corporate revamp. This was the first update since receiving the new machine, I asked the IT guys what was in the update but they didn't know - just said "standard Microsoft updates". Hmmmm... no comment.

Anyway, many thanks for your help,
Kevin Giles,

Hi Kevin,

That's the scary part.... standard MS upgrades...  never fully tested by them (next to impossible anyway), but sent to your PC without your knowledge if the automatic upgrade is on.

I always turn them off and explain to IT why it is off...  (while ignoring the security shpeel, of course 😉 )

Thanks for the additional info, and glad to read that your back up & running.
