I am trying to get in contact with a new sb-RIO -9638 card. It never turns up in Max, neither with DHCP or static IP adress.
What tricks can I use to find its IP adress ? I have scanned all adresses at 169.254.*.* with a ping, but no reply on any of these adresses.
Anybody, anything ?

Do you have the manual for the sb-RIO 96xx? There should be sections in it to tell you how to connect to the Host, including using DHCP or setting a Static IP. If not, go to the Web and search for "sbRIO-9638" and click on "Manuals".

How new is it really? It may have set an explicit IP address In the manual should be a description of how to reset it to its default configuration. It usually involves a DIP switch and a restart through power cycling.
Once it is in default mode it will try to request a DHCP address. So make sure that you either have no DHCP server on the network to which you connect the board or a way to view in that server what IP address it assigned to what device. Without DHCP address it will assign itself a random address of the auto negotiation address space. But your computer can only communicate with it if the port connected to the same network as the RIO is either the default gateway adapter (and there are no routers and smart switches in between) or is also using auto negotiation address range.
Generally it works best to directly connect the device to a physical network port on your computer, make sure this adapter is configured to use DHCP and check its IP address to be in the auto negotiation range. If you still can’t see the sbRIO make sure you performed its reset procedure and if that doesn’t help it may be a DOA.

I managed to sort this out by connecting to the
cards RS-232 port, setting it to Safe Mode (Enabling console output), restarting it,
and hence reading its info in the old Hyperterminal software. There I was able
to read its IP adress. Problem solved.
