[suggestion] Save to previous version online service

I was just thinking since there are plenty of users that need to backsave to previous versions time to time if it would be problem for NI to create online service where one would upload VI and chose to which version to (back)save it. It would solve many problems and I guess that it would help many ppl.

Perhaps better would be a separate utility program to do it.

It would understand 8.6, 8.5, 8.2, 8.1, 8.0, 7.1, 7.0, 6.1, 6.0, however far back is reasonably feasible.

It could then open any file, and it would incorporate all the back-converters that are in each version, so that you could save it as any past version.

That way, LabVIEW itself doesn't carry around all that baggage, but the function is there when you need it.

Or...

I could maintain a computer with virtual machines on it, and keep each version of LabVIEW running on a virtual machine, and do the job for you.  I'd make millions!

Or not.

Hi there

A utility program would be great, yes. But that would need to carry all thinkable versions of all modules and toolkits or whatever. That would be a real beast....

I'd support the online downgrade service. Would also be a nice opportunity to test this process for NI itself.

Best regards

Hi everybody,

I believe that to comunicate your needs and ideas, it is better to use suggestions on "Product Suggestion Center", or visit www.ni.com and navigate to Contact NI -> Give us feedback.

I don't read that as a no, but rather a suggestion of where to officially request such a service.  Such a request might even include a link to this thread.  If everyone who was interested in such a feature were to respond to this thread, NI might get a better feel for how badly   this is needed.

I think an online application to handle this could be very usefull!

I've only needed it  twice today just to follow the examples sent to me in response to my post.  Instead, I have to download a trial version and install it on another computer.  That's another hour I'll never get back.  You can say a lot about Microsoft but they do let you Save As previous version.  Yes, there is a warning but simple PLabView examples rarely use up-version features; nevertheless they are prohibited from loading in earlier versions.

You should post back and ask for someone to save it in an older version, people will generally oblige you

What jmcbee is absolutely true and probably much faster than installing all those previous versions.  We help to convert VI's on this forum quite often.

So kind of an on-line service already.. 😉

I sure wish the "zealous veteran" had suggested that in response to my request for an older version rather than just telling me to code it up.  I think veterans have difficulty realizing that it takes years to be able to look at these tiny icons and recognize the functions to which they belong.  If I have a working example I can use context help to get myself oriented.
