what exactly do IMAQ EdgeDetection and IMAQ Quantify do?

hi all,

a supplier sent me a piece of equipment to test with code written in Labview.
now i'm trying to figure out exactly what it is that they're doing.  they first extract an image into the IMAQ EdgeDetection VI and pipe the output of that into IMAQ Quantify.  now i'm trying to figure out exactly what the 'mean value'
that IMAQ Quantify spits out is a mean value of.  hopefully someone  can help me understand this.

Hello Dan,

Thank you for contacting National Instruments.  The mean value that gets returned from the IMAQ Quantify is an average pixel intensity for the region that is defined by the Image Mask input of this VI.  If no image mask is defined, then the mean value will represent the average pixel intensity for the entire image.
