why does mouse stop when pressing ctrl or shift

When using an 8175 controller and Windwos NT 4, the mouse will disappear and not come back if I use the shift key or the control key.

I can't say that I have seen this issue before, but I would make sure that you have the correct drivers for your mouse, if it requires any. Some 3rd party mice need their own driver. Also make sure that there isn't a program that enables extra mouse features running that might be causing this behavior. Have you tried different mice? (PS/2, USB, etc) You might also want to upgrade to the latest version of the service pack for NT, I believe the most current is 6,
