All CVI windows open in minimized state

Hello,
I have a very strange behaviour of the CVI 8.0 IDE.
When in the workspace, all windows (c, h, uir) I pick from my project open in a minimized state. They open with the smallest possible size (X- and Y)  you can zoom them. It does not matter in which state they were closed. This applies to all my projects.

Also when I open files with Ctrl-U, or the IDE opens a file via a Ctrl-I action, - each and everything comes up in minimized.
It's not much fun to work with CVI with this behaviour ...

I've run the "Repair" procedure of the CVI installation, - without success.

Any ideas?

Thanks,.
Greg

Hi, Greg.

That certainly sounds like an unusual (and annoying) problem. I tried a variety of ways to reproduce that behavior without success. I know you said that the problem occurs with all your projects, but does it apply to all your workspaces as well?

Also, does the behavior occur if you create a new project, save it, and then reopen it?

Thanks! Have a nice afternoon.

Hello Sarah,

yes, it is also in all workspaces, and yes, it also applies to new workspaces and projects.

I've un- and re-installed the complete CVI package yesterday, - still the problem is here.

Please see the attached pdf file. It gives you an idea of the behaviour.

Thanks,

Greg

Hello, Greg

There was a similar bug to what you are reporting, but that should have only manifested itself by shrinking your workspace window, not the document windows, especially not new windows that you create from a new project. So we're a bit stumped on this one.

There is something you can try... when you're not running any instance of CVI, run your registry editor, and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\National Instruments\CVI\8.0\WindowPositions. Rename 'WindowPositions' to something else, so that CVI cannot find any of your cached window positions. Then start up CVI again, and see if the problem still happens with a new workspace. Let us know what happens, so that we can then figure out how to proceed.

Hello Luis,

the workspace window seems to be the only one which does not shrink, - so this is probably an other bug.

I located and renamed the WindowPositions entry in registry. I then lauchned CVI8.0 and created a new workspace. I then opened a new source file and unfortunately see the same behaviour. Everything but the workspace comes up minimized.  Same thing for my existing workspaces.

I opened the registry again and noticed that a new WindowPositions folder was created.

I have two other issues (instabilities) with CVI8.0, altough I don't know if they relate to this. I already tried to use the "Ask an engineer" "by eMail" support via the NI website as I have done it many times before. (We have an active SSP contract) However, since a few days those request seem to get lost. I neither get a confirmation eMail nor an answer. I have already asked our local NI office (Swizerland) to take care about the support problem. I'd appreciate if you could create a service request  (my eMail is g.schmidle@nt-instruments.com) so I can show you the other two issues. You can then decide if they relate to this issue.

Thanks Luis,

Greg

Hello, Greg

Concerning your problems in creating a service request, I'll try to follow up with the appropriate department here at NI and hopefully I'll have an answer for you on Monday. One way or another, we should be able to get that service request created.

Concerning your window position problem...

Can you try putting your workspace in integrated view mode (Help>>Workspace View Selection), and see what happens? If that

By the way, it is normal that the WindowPositions key was recreated. If CVI doesn't find any of its user preference keys it will create a new one with a set of default values, which will then be saved when you exit CVI. If you want to preserve the settings that you had previously, you should be able to delete the new one, and rename the one you had saved off back to "WindowPositions" (since this turned out not to be a factor in the problem you're having).

Thanks for your help so far.

Luis

Hello Greg_NTI,

Regarding the support request you have created via ni.com/support, those are sent to the appropriate NI branch for your region.  They should be getting in contact with you shortly to address the issue.  You might want to try to create another service request if you do not get a response in the next few for a local applications engineer.

Thanks

Hello Luis,

the integrated view mode does not show this behaviour.

All panels open in a reasonable size at the first time, and after the first time, they open in the size and at the position in which I save them.

One of the other instabilites I was talking about ealier is still present. The other one only occurs every 2 weeks or so.

Thanks & Best Regards,

Greg

Hello Wendy,

has there been a recent support policy change?

a) I have received support many times before this way
b) I always got a confirmation eMail, but not for those lost or forwarded requests
c) I did not get any answer for the lost or forwarded requests

Best Regards,

Greg

Greg -

Please accept my apologies.  After finding out about the trouble you were having in getting email support, I went back through all the configurations in the system and found the reason why your messages were not being delivered properly.  I have fixed the issue, and will double check the rest of the settings to be sure that no one else experiences this problem.  Unfortunately, I can't fix the messages you submitted in the past, but I will manually send your questions to the branch.

Thanks for bringing this problem to our attention so that we could get it corrected.  Again, I'm sorry about this mix up.
