Can't open UIR - Control type not valid

A previously openable UIR file now generates the message: "Unable to open user interface resource file (The control type passed was not a valid type)". Is there any solution other than to recreate by hand?

This is usually only the case when you are trying to open a UIR that was saved in a newer version of CVI. For example, you have a UIR from CVI 6.0 and try to open it in CVI 5.5. Where was this file created and where are you trying to open it?

Right on the money. The offending shortcut has been banished to hard disk oblivion.
