So you can view the Datasocket portion and the CVI application as two separate entities. On the CVI installation CD, there is actually one independent installer for datasocket located in the "Parts" folder. Now if you want to deploy your application built in CVI, then you would need to include the Datasocket and the CVIRTE. The RTE is needed to execute the program. The Datasocket is needed because your program is interacting with it.
This document has a good overview of Datasocket. We also have a few shipping examples on Datasocket with CVI. You can find additional examples of datasocket on the developer zone.
