How to use status pins(4 outputs) and data pins(8 inputs) of the parallel port at the same time.

As part of my project work i have to get 8 digital inputs and send 4 digital outputs.so i think of using Parallel Port of the pc.i can make use of 8 datalines for inputs .I found in NI site that it is possible to use status pins for outputs.But is it possible to use the status pins for outputs and data pins for inputs at the same time.please help me .also mention any steps to be taken or kept in mind while implementing.also include any example vi which might be usefull.  Thanks in advance
