I saw another post from a few days ago reporting a problem activating with a serial number. I have also been unable to activate our LabWindows 2017 since I tried last Friday (I had to remove it from a computer to test something). Is the activation server down? See screenshot for the error.

Support has responded telling me this sometimes happen, and suggests installing it as an Evaluation.

NI Update Service is now complaining about an error communication with NI. Has somebody else noticed this?

Yes, same here. And I'm the one who complained I couldn't activate my site license, and couldn't also activate a .lic file. I finally managed to do an online manual activation, but it's such a waste of time I've so far only done it for CVI; so I still need to do it to 25 other products I more seldom use !
