LabWindows/CVI - AT command to call a phone number via RS232??

I have runned the following example: National Instruments\CVI2009\sample\rs232\serial.cws.
In his description it says that after you configure the port you can send and receive commands from a device via a serial port RS232.
When I send a string of characters and i push the button <Read> I receive the string of characters.
I want to send an AT command (ex: ATxxxxxxxxxx;).
When I push the <Read> button he reads the command but he doesn`t call the number.."xxxxxxxx" like he does when i use the command in HyperTerm.
This is the first time I work with Rs232 and with a modem and I don`t understand how it works.
When I read what I send to the modem does this mean that he received the command? If yes why doesn`t he call the number?
