Use of LabWindows on 2 PCs

I just spoke with a sales representative at NI who told me that I physically could not install LabWindows/CVI 7 on both my desktop and laptop PCs. Is this true? I am an independent developer and will need to do on-site debugging at my customer's facilities. Having to buy two copies of $2,000 software will be a deal killer. Most companies allow what I need to do.

Hi SteveW,

Will not the customer have there own copy that you can use? Presumably your are using the customer equipment on site.

I think you are allowed to have one work copy and one home copy.
Thanks.

You're limited to having LabWindows installed on one machine at your workplace (which would include your office and your customer's site).
You can read the license agreement here.
You have a couple of options:
1. Uninstall LabWindows from your desktop machine and install it on your laptop before you go to your customer's site. This really isn't as painful as it sounds, depending on how much you change the default options.
2. Talk to NI about a Debug License, which allows you to temporarily install software on a second machine for debug purposes.

The license agreement clearly states a Home Usage Exception: you can install a copy at home. But other than that, a Single Seat License allows installation on only one machine and explictly denies floating, concurrent or shared use. Some developer's may feel like they live at their customer's site, but that doesn't qualify under the Home Usage Exception.

I believe that the Home Usage Exception is reasonable (and fairly standard, I believe) and applies in my case. The issue is that per the sale representative, the registration process for LabWindows/CVI prevents installation two computers. I interpreted this as being an online process, like with WinXP (although I believe WinXP allows installation on one desktop and one laptop). She further stated that this was not the case for LabView. Can anyone provide clarification?

I will be delivering executable files to my customer (a small company with a small budget), so they have no need to buy their own copy of LabWindows, at least not at this time.

Thanks,

Steve
