Using Network Variables from Linux

Hi, I am interested in using the new Network Variables (or even the Shared Variables) that are available in LabWindows/CVI 8.1. I am having a hard time figuring out how much of the functionality is available from Linux. There seems to be conflicting info out there on the NI website. I understand that I have to create the application on a Windows machine but can I then run it on a Linux platform and use the Network Variables (or Shared Variables).

Hi Liz,

Currently the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Module for Linux does not have support for Network Variables.  The Run-Time Module for Linux is essentially a way for users to compile their LabWindows/CVI applications on Linux. So you will write your code on Windows and then re-compile it on Linux once you know everything works. 

As far as what’s supported, there are several resources you can use to get a list. These resources are the Differences in LabWindows/CVI between Windows and Linux LabWindows/CVI Help topic, and the Introduction to the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Module for Linux tutorial.  

What I would suggest is to submit a product suggestion and let us know what your application, what its needs are, what libraries you would like to see supported that are currently not.

Hello Liz,

As Jonathan mentioned, the latest released version of the CVI Run-Time module for Linux is version 8.0, which doesn't yet include the Network Variable library. But NI does have a standalone version of this library for Linux, that can be used in conjunction with the CVI Linux module. Since we don't yet have an expected release date for a new version of the CVI Linux module, I'm pretty sure that if you ask your NI representative to send you a copy of the standalone network variable library, he or she would be okay with that.
