viReadSTB problem

I'm using a VISA driver that I wrote to talk (over GPIB) to a piece of
custom test equipment. This eqipment uses some bits in the serial poll
response byte to report back some important status (like busy, etc).
I've never had any problems reading this status with regular GPIB
commands (ibrsp) but using VISA's viReadSTB command I get an error
message about 50 percent of the time. Specifically I get back a
0xBFFF003E error ("Could not perform operation because of I/O error").
This error code isn't in the list of possible return codes in the
programmer reference manual and the error string isn't very descriptive.
Does anyone have some idea what the error actually means and what might
be causing it?

Thanks
