LabVIEW under Linux [was part of http://decibel.ni.com/content/message/12897#12897]

Sure enough that discussion was off the subject, and deserves to be closed.

So let me just reset, since I was asked to apologize and will not.

1-Admittedly off the main topic, Yawgmoth noted: "i tried to look for the evaluation version of LabVIEW, but it seems it's not available for linux.... "

2-to which I replied that Linux support in LabVIEW is anyway badly incomplete. I referenced http://www.ni.com/labview/how_to_buy.htm  which, with  a, click on "Data Acquisition Functions and Wizards", reveals that the DAQ wizard is not available under Linu...

Here I wish to express gratitude to Rolf (JoeFriedchicken) for having taught  me today something new. He just wrote:

"Only rereading the entire thread and your and SongD's last comments makes me believe that he is actually talking about the DAQ Wizard, which IMHO is just a bit of a useless tool for anything but a Getting Started application."

Well, it so happens, Rolf, that I purchased a 6008 for a simple application of the "low Getting Started level", and that I started trying to use LabVIEW with its Getting Started guide which completely relies on that "useless tool" named DAQ wizard,,,

Indeed, aged 75, and having started using computers in Jan 1961   at CERN, I had never seen before, that following the Getting Started guide from the manufacturer is not the right way to "get started". May I dare ask if it is intended to be read AFTER mastering the product?

Just like "create a VI" being in need of hermeneutics (see Wikipedia if necessary) to be found meaning "create a VI", which is what that Getting Started "useless tool" indeed spledidly helps doing. ... when available of course.

3-I further clearly stated  that for my tiny application on the 6008, niDAQmx was not a solution, as the NI USB devices, and the 6008 in particular. are not supported by niDAQmx under Linux, again with reference to the source of my statement.:

http://ftp.ni.com/support/softlib/multifunction_daq/nidaqmx/8.0.1%20Linux%20Only/readme.txt

All of the above is why SongD's suggestions:

a-that I read the very README file which I had already quoted.

b-that I consider pouring extra money for the Application Builder to more easily deploy an application which could not be created using LabVIEW under Linux as I had already described (hen and chicken, that is).

managed to deeply irritate me.

A suggestion to NI people: consider correcting all your documentations, and advertisements by replacing "Linux support" by "partial Linux support"  or "limited Linux support" everywhere these words occur close to each other. By switching on such an orange light, you would save a lot of  time and frustration to people who presently have no alternative to discovering the truth the hard way.

Yanqele,

I have forwarded your request to the people in charge of the Getting Started guide. They have added a feature request to add changes for the Mac and Linux platforms in a future release. Thank you for your feedback.
