1394 camera does not appear in MAX

Solved!
Go to solution

Hi, I have a new AVT Pike 1394 camera which should be supported by LabView. It works fine with the vendor software. However, it does not appear in Measurements and automation even though is should be supported.

I'm running LabView 8.6 with NI-IMAQ 4.1 and NI-IMAQdx 3.2

Any suggestion how to solve this annoying problem?

Hi,

Please make sure, that the Microsoft 1394 card driver is installed and not the Intek driver (is installed from the FirePackage) any more.
You might use the "Install or remove 1394 driver" tool from the FirePackag directory or manually in the the device manager.

When the camera is appearing in the device manager as imaging device, it will also be available in MAX.

Yes, now it works. Thanks for the fast response to my problem. I only wish that I posted my question a few days ago.

I think you should add this problem to the AVA support forum.

Thanks again!

Hello, I had the same issue, but the reason I had the firepackage installed, was becuase I was trying to get the 800mbps, instead of the 400mbps (on my 64 bit system).  When I uninstall it, the "imaging devices" icon reappears, and I can use MAX, but I don't have that high 800mbps rate.

Am I suck with the 400mbps if I want to use labview on my 64 bit system?

Hi veritas

The NI driver that is used to acquire from firewire camera relies on the driver for the firewire interface from Microsoft. Unfortunately since XP SP2 there has been an issue with the driver that downgrades the speed. The reason why the firepackage works is because it relies on a separate firewire driver, not the Windows one. You didn't specify which 64 bit OS you are running, but I'm guessing it's either XP SP3 or Vista. If you are using XP you can try the workarounds mentioned here (although I'm not sure they are applicable to XP64, it's worth a shot). If you are using Vista there does not seems to be a solution yet, the ball is in Microsofts court.

Best Regards

I am also having a problem with MAX recognizing my camera. No IMAQ devices appear in the configuration tree under Devices and Interfaces and nothing happens when I refresh. The 1394 driver is from Microsoft and the the camera (Basler A102f) appears in the Windows device manager with the niimaqdxkw.sys driver. I've used this camera on another computer with the same drivers and LabVIEW 8.6. However, the new computer is Windows 7 (before I was using Window XP) so I'm not sure if that's the issue?

thanks

I have a similar problem. I am using a HP Compaq8100 CMT PC running Windows 7 32 Pro. I am using LabVIEW 8.6.1 and IMAQdx 3.4, IMAQ 4.3.0, NI Vision 9.0.0.

In Device Manager I can see the 1394 board (PCIe) as a Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller.

In Max no IMAQdx devices appear.

I have tried three different 1394 boards. With one of them I reinstalled the VDM and the board appeared and it also then found the AVT Marlin camera attached. Some time later, without any reboots and when I came to test it, the IMAQdx item had disappeared from MAX.

I installed a new 1394 board and the OS found and loaded the driver giving me the line in the Device Manager above. But still no love from MAX.

How can I get MAX to recognise my 1394 board?

I found that the problem went away when I downgraded to Windows XP. Both my camera and PCI, which previously could not be properly recognized by MAX despite having the correct drivers, were recognized fine with Win XP. I had contacted a sales agent at NI and he confirmed that LabVIEW 8.6 is not compatible with windows 7, although you can install it. I guess you can create VIs but that's about it.

Here's a webpage with more compatibility info

Downgrading is not an option.

I powered down and put one of the other 1394 cards in, leaving the first one in as well, and when I powered up it found the camera in the first card. All seems good and I spent a day doing some development work.

Left the machine running all weekend and when I come back MAX does not see the card and camera anymore. The device manager still sees the 1394 devices but MAX is blind.

Is there something in the use of LabVIEW that causes the visibility of hardware to come and go?

I have seen this before when a cable is too long, what length cables do you have to the camera?
