Go to device manager and verify that your 1394 *card* is using the Microsoft driver. Then verify that the camera shows up in device manager and is associated with the IMAQdx driver.

Thank you for your prompt response, actually that is what lead me to install Pylon's software. Its because the camera didn't show up in the Device Manager nor MAX.
Is it possible that what I'm facing in difficulties with the camera is because of the evaluation versions that I'm using ?

It shouldn't, because MAX will always work regardless of license status.
If the camera doesn't show up in device manager, do you at least see your 1394 card? What driver is it listed as using?

I'd check the cables and camera. I don't believe the 601 has any LEDs indicating it is powered on. The camera being detected by the OS happens prior to any NI software being involved, so there's not much troubleshooting you can do inside the NI software. Try swapping cameras or trying the same camera in a different PC. Either the firewire port on your PC or the camera itself could be broken. We've seen this happen a lot when the 1394a connectors are inserted backwards and both ports can become fried.

Did you ever end up figuring out the error? I am having the same problem.
I am using a Basler acA640-90gc camera, NI MAX 5.4, and a NI PXI/PCIe-8231 interface device.

I am running into a similar issue with a Basler aCA2500-14gc and NI PCIe 8233. I am unable to view the camera (and the card) in MAX, and am unable to view a serial or IP in pylon. I have tried using an ethernet switch between the card and the camera to set them to the same subnet, and have tried disabling firewalls. The status lights on the card are active, but no status lights are available on the camera itself. The camera does get warm, so I know it is recieving power over ethernet. I have tried swapping cables as well.
The card does show up in Windows Device Manager, listed under Network Adapters as "NI PCIe-8233 Ethernet Adapter", but it does not show up under NI devices. According to NI tech. support this is typical behavoir for this card. Any reson why they would sell a card that is known to not be recognized by MAX? Also, more importantly, any suggestions as to how to get MAX to take an image?

Network cards are not displayed in MAX, only the cameras that are connected to them show up. This is the same behavior as FireWire cards/cameras have. It is simply a result that it is more of a bus interface rather than a fixed framegrabber. Some network cards like the PCIe-8237R have additional programmable functionality and so they do show up in MAX, but the cameras still show up under a different category, not under the card.
