JPEG2000

Is the IMAQ library going to implement the new JPEG2000 image compression technology in the future? I would think it to be a viable alternative to VisionStream for real time video dumping to hard drives.

JPEG2000 is a technology that we are currently considering implementing in the future. Thank you for your feedback and suggestion.

Derick,

I would also like to see JPEG2000 implemented, since you get high quality images with high compression ratios. However, I don't expect it to work well for streaming to disk real time. Image compression takes time, so you will either lose a lot of image quality or it will be too slow to do it real time. Once the video is compressed, it will probably play back real time quite well, since decompression usually takes less time than compression.

Bruce,

It is my understanding that JPEG2000 uses wavelet technology, which is currently being used in security hard drive video recording systems, see: www.dallmeier-electronic.com. Yes, I realize that compression of video takes time as I too design and program video systems, see www.controlvisioninc.com. I'm just always looking for another way to mill data from our systems. Thanks for the reply.

Derick,

I think it would work well if the JPEG2000 was built into the hardware instead of software. I think if you were using hardware compression you could store video real time to a hard drive. It could be retrieved either using hardware or software decompression.
