Using PXI 8234 with any GigEthernet Cameras

Hi,

I need to have a PXI card to interface any GigE camera. I have gone through the ni website and found that GigE card for image acquisition is available as PCIe/PXIe 8234 card. But i also saw that there is this PXI 8234 GigE card which is not mentioned to be for Image Acquisition.

My question is can i use this PXI 8234 GigE card for working with GigE cameras and do image acquisition? The reason why i am asking this question is, I have only a PXI Chassis. So i am thinking of going ahead with a PXI card.

 Hi all,

Sorry. I have mentioned the PXI GigE card name wrongly as PXI 8234. The card is PXI 8231.

I want to know if it is possible to use this PXI 8231 GigE card for Image Acquisition from a GigE camera.

Regards,

Sundar Ganesh

Hi Sundar,

We do not recommend the PXI 8234 for GigE Vision because it only supports the old 32-bit/33Mhz PCI bus which is limited in total system-wide bandwidth to roughly the same as one direction of a single gigabit ethernet port. GigE Vision cameras tend to send their images in a very bursty fashion to limit the latency of the image transfer and so typically can send each image at the full rate of the network. On a standard PCI bus this is likely to cause packet loss unless you throttle the camera appropriately. While you can make it work in some situations, it does not make sense to recommend it to users for GigE Vision purposes.

A much better option that we do recommend is the PXIe-8234 that is PXI Express and so it has plenty of dedicated bandwidth.

Hope this helps,
Eric
