labview-compatible high resolution color video camera

Hi. My project requires the ability to zoom in on a feature on the face (eyes) so that we can measure pupil dilation. However, when using a consumer camcorder, the resolution at 640 x 800 is pretty bad when we zoom in on the pupils.

Are there video cameras out there capable of doing this? The reason we need a video camera is because the image will be a snapshot from streaming video, and then that image will be analyzed via NI's Vision Assistant.

Did I mention that zoom/audio is desireable as well?? Any recommendations and help appreciated!!! It doesn't matter if its consumer (DV) or whatever, just as long as it has the IEEE1394 interface.

Thanks!!

It sounds like you are switching from optical zoom to digital zoom on the camcorder, which degrades the image quality. For good images, you need to stay in the optical zoom range. Perhaps you can add a fixed magnification lens on the front of your camcorder, like a 2x or 4x. This might boost your zoom enough to get decent images. Another good idea is to move the camcorder as close to the subject as possible without causing distraction.

If you can't add a lens to the one you have, look for one with a large range of optical zoom. Ignore the digital zoom range, because it is basically useless.

If you want to switch to a machine vision camera with a standard zoom lens, you will get a better image and be able to bring it straight into LV or Vision Assistant
through the IMAQ 1394 drivers. You wouldn't have audio or continuous video recording ability though. You could record short video clips easily for later analysis.

Another good resource to look at (if you are looking for different camera options) is our online Camera Advisor (linked below). This advisor is meant to help people find the best camera for their applications. You can search by manufacturer, model name or by specifications.
