It sounds like you are switching from optical zoom to digital zoom on the camcorder, which degrades the image quality. For good images, you need to stay in the optical zoom range. Perhaps you can add a fixed magnification lens on the front of your camcorder, like a 2x or 4x. This might boost your zoom enough to get decent images. Another good idea is to move the camcorder as close to the subject as possible without causing distraction.
If you can't add a lens to the one you have, look for one with a large range of optical zoom. Ignore the digital zoom range, because it is basically useless.
If you want to switch to a machine vision camera with a standard zoom lens, you will get a better image and be able to bring it straight into LV or Vision Assistant
through the IMAQ 1394 drivers. You wouldn't have audio or continuous video recording ability though. You could record short video clips easily for later analysis.
