thread inspection

Has anyone had any experience inspecting machined threads with VBAI ? I would like to inspect a threaded fitting by viewing it three times indexing 120 degrees each time.  It would be ideal if I could string the images into one picture, but I can see some problems with trying to line up the images. I could do three separate inspections.  I need to verify thread profile, inspect for damage such as nicks, and check the major diameter. I was thinking I could compare to a template, but I think this requires a lot of time. I need to do the complete inspection in 2 seconds. If anyone has had any ideas I sure would appreciate the help.

Thanks

MartyP,

Do you already have VBAI? Besides the defect detection VBAI can easily detect the other parameters in under 2 seconds. The timing of the defect detection would be determined by the parameter of the inspection but can be checked by the performance meter.

Have you looked at the NI Vision Concepts Manual? I suggest looking at chapter 17: Golden Template Comparison for help with the defect detection. Other chapters would help
to verify thread profile and check the major diameter.

Thank you for your reply. I am using VBAI 3.5.  I thought I might have a problem  using a template because my image at inspection will never be oriented exactly the same as my template. Being a helix it's position from end to end will vary from part to part. If I have to do this in three steps to get the full 360 degrees I will need to do all three inspections in about 2 seconds. The part will be presented to the camera for 1/2 second and will take 1/10 second to index to the next position. It will do this twice and then I will have about 1 second to analize my images. I will try what you suggested with the template first to see if I get reliable results and then adress the timing issues.

Thanks,

MartyP
