Are you sure the code is running on the smart camera? Do you see the smart camera name in the bottom left portion of the LV front panel when you run the VI? I assume you see it downloading when you press the run button..is this correct? What if you drop a Vision Acquisition Express VI (located in the Vision and Motion palette under Vision Express), and make sure you can acquire from the Express Wizard, configure a continuous acquisition and press OK...it will generate a while loop, so just add the shared variable in the loop so that gets updated as well when the example runs and put the other acquisition code in a disable structure.
Hope that helps...no good idea why you'd get a timeout in LV when it works fine in MAX.
