Measurement Studio 7.0 Eval breaks Visual Studio 2003 Help

Hi Colin

We're planning some changes to the license agreements for NI software. One of the changes is going from per-computer to per-user. You can see more information in this discussion. This will affect all future versions of NI software. I hope this helps.

Hey Colin,

Can you elaborate on your concern about activation in general?  Also, does your opinion change given that future software will allow a user to install software on multiple computers?

Best,

Hi Bilal

That's good news for me as I find software like Labwindows (came with MS) with the new activation unusable, just a pain, so I don't use it.

It is  also a good a practice to allow developers to install on home computer to practice (as covered by named single user license).

Borland and Microsoft have no problem with this.

Borland did boob with there Borland C#  Builder which has activation so another product I don't use, also Half Life 2 lost sales because of online activation and related problems.

Corporate users normally do not use activated software at all, not even Windows XP. (we are a corporate)

Having said that our test rigs down stairs (multi user) all have a separate licensed copy of Labview installed because the technician's all run from the IDE.  Seems it is to much trouble to compile here as our engineers don't seem to understand these things, defeating the aim of Labview being a software development system, but incompetent engineer's is not an NI's problem.

Thanks for that one

Colin

Hi Nate

I don't want activation at all.

Time is money for us and when a computer goes down I need to replace it or repair it ASAP.

None of our test rig computer are on line so it means phone calls and more work and wasted time.

I don't see the point of activation if you are going to use a single user license. It becomes pointless.

Microsoft had a big problem but I don't see NI having the same problems.

You no who your customers are so should have some trust in us (not the case with Microsoft).

Look at all the problem user have had in the past with your CW controls, user should not have to put up with these license issues.

For my self I often have to set up for new projects and would find it a pain in the ----.

Example

One project uses your FPGA card so required Labview to create a DLL front end for the FPGA card.

This is used by a Microsoft Front end using DOT.NET (C#) and MS.

I might use other third party component for DOT.NET.

Assuming all used activation even thought they don't.

Window XP, MS Office (Excell), Labview, Measurement Studio, third party component. What a pain.
Up and down stairs to the office to use a phone.

I had the same problem with NI DiAdem when I got it, what machine to install on as I would normally install as and when needed. (it is on one of three current software development machines, I can only use one machine at a time DiAdem it is not used much)
Also I can not install on my home machine (the normal way to study new software as there is no time at work, as aproved by Microsoft and Borland for software development).
Hence DiAdem does not get a lot of use or interrogated with any of our systems. Result, lost sales.

Hope this helps avoid activation

Both Microsoft and Borland give there base packages away to get new customers. The last time NI gave Labview away (PC User mag) it was on a floppy disk. (I still have it)

Thanks

Colin

Hi Colin,

I just wanted to clarify with NI's software licensing policy that you are allowed to install on one home computer.  Having activation doesn't change this policy either - simply install on your home computer and activate with the same serial number you received at work.

If you have any questions about this, just let us know.

Thanks!
