Sorry for the confusion. I actually meant the unhandled exception error vanished, along with the first-chance exceptions. I don't get buffer overrun messages anymore either. They were there when I ran them a project with just the examples and the required .c and .h support files, and disappeared when I implemented them as part of my MFC application.
I shall also concede and agree with you all now that onboard programs are indeed more trouble than they're worth in my case lol.
