If you want to use a DAQ card to control your stepper motors, then you will have to use the counter/timers on your DAQ card with NI-DAQ.
If you have an NI 7334 or 7344, then you should download the Flexmotion driver off of our web site.

However, if you have your own motion control hardware, it is possible to use a DAQ board with digital outputs to generate the signals necessary to control a stepper motor amplifier/driver. The only thing you have to be aware is what kind of signal and sequence is required to drive your motor. However, there are many factors to consider should you decide to pursue the DAQ board control signal generation (such as the accuracy you need, the rate your motor can change speed, feedback systems). There are also motion hardware systems that can be controlled via the serial port, which in that case you can use the built in LabVIEW serial VIs to i
ssue your commands out to your serial port. If you search for "Stepper motor control" by typing it in the Ask box, you can find some discussions about this aspect. One particular discussion which may prove to be useful is this one:

If you are interested in finding the cost of NI software/hardware for an educational instituation, please call your NI sales representative by clicking on the "Contact NI" link in the upper right hand corner of this web page.

Please visit ni.com/motion to find out more about NI motion control products. It may turn out that having a motion system from NI to work with LabVIEW would help minimize your development time from an integration standpoint.

Hope this helps!
