The UMI connects to the PCI 7344 through a sleek metal connector and the other end which is a blue colour moulded 68 pin female connector goes to the connector block. I you are using this kind of a setup then its called the UMI. Check in the NI Automation 2005 catalog to know exactly abt. your hardware. There are two kinds of UMI interfaces. The UMI 7764 for accessing only the motion I/Os and the UMI 7774 for accessing both motion I/Os and digital I/Os. Also the UMI 7774 gives 24V logic which is essential in motion control systems. So if you have not yet purchased one or planning to procure it then I suggest UMI 7774 as a better option. I want to know which company / college you are from.

There is a document on the web that describes some of the basic differences between an UMI and a passive connector block. Unfortunately this document is a bit out of date. Please follow these links for the full documentation of the UMI-7764 and the UMI-7774.
