control max number of motors

Hello,

I am newbie and need help. I am trying to find a motion controller that will allow me to contol 50 or more small motors (not working simultaneously). Any info on this will be greatly appreciated. Is their a max number that can be put on a back plane?

It would be helpful if you would tell us what kind of motors you want to control: dc, ac, synchronous, servo, stepper motors...

NI makes controllers for a maximum of 8 axes, and I haven't heard of any manufacturer having a higher number of axes per control board.
