I've wired the simple, normally open limit switch on my translation stage/stepper assembly to the appropriate feedback pins on the UMI-7774, but when i step the stage to the limit position (verified with ohm meter) using NI Max, I can't activate the limit. I'm sure that I am doing (or not doing) something really stupid...

Can you check your Motion I/O settings in NI-MAX to see if everything is configured correctly. Also, what is the limit switch status under in 1-D Interactive (under Interactive folder)?
Lastly, what is the model number of your controller card?

Miro,
I'm using the 7340 controller card. I can control the stage as i need to and the motion parameters agree with independent measurements/calculations as expected. i can read the encoder back properly as well. I have attached a screen shot of the 1d interactive screen from Max that only shows the negative limit switch enabled but i have tried every possible combination of switch enable and polarity. When i unplug the feedback controller and check each switch separately with an ohmmeter, they each close as expected at the end of stage travel.

That is strange, well if you tried all possible combintations in MAX then I would go back to wiring and double check there.
Here is a manual for UMI-7774. Start on page 16
