Hi IronM,
You are correct that LabVIEW 7.1 is supported by NI-DAQmx 7.2 or later (NI-DAQ for Windows Support for Different LabVIEW Versions)You are also noticing that once a VI is saved in a newer version of LabVIEW, it will not open in the older version. However, you can ‘save with options’ >> Save for Previous Version (from 7.1 to 7.0; 7.0 to 6.1) to revert code to older versions of LabVIEW if needed. Lastly, NI-DAQmx 8.5 will only support LabVIEW 7.1 or higher.
To directly answer your question, using LabVIEW 7.1 and DAQmx 8.5 should work. Having LabVIEW 6.1 installed should not matter, but in your case could be removed. It may also be worth re-installing DAQmx 8.5 to make sure that LabVIEW 7.1 support was installed.
Check to make sure that your card is found under ‘data acquisition devices’ in device manager, and then under ‘NI-DAQmx Devices’ in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). After this, than go on to make sure that the DAQmx pallet shows in LabVIEW 7.1, indicating DAQmx support is installed for 7.1.
