Can I use oscilloscope probe 1:100, to measure 200V AC with NI 9239

Hello.

I want to measure discharge of a capacitor over coil. The voltage is 200 V . Since the NI 9239 has +- 10V, is it possible to use an oscilloscope probe with 1:100 to measure that voltage, or do I have to do a voltage divider?

Regards

Boris

Passive oscilloscope probes are commonly made by a series resistor (with a capacitor in parallel for compensation), and are intended to be used on 1Mohm-inputs of scopes. For example, a 1:100 probe have a 99Mohm resistor, so you actually obtain a 1:100 voltage divider.

In case your NI 9239 hardware (which I don't know, sorry) have 1Mohm inputs, you can use the passive probe.

Of course, always be careful while handling hazardous voltages!

Hope this helps

Dear Boris,

As you will notice from the following link presenting the detailed specifications of NI 9239, the input resistance is 1MOhm, so you should be able to measure using the attenuation probes.
