Counting number of pause trigger events in analog data acquisition

I am doing analog data acquisition using a digital pause trigger. I would like to count the number of times the trigger sets off and append it to the incoming data. I was thinking of doing this by routing/duplicating the trigger signal to a counter channel and then synchronizing the counter with the analog acquisition task. Is there an easier way to do this?
