Is USB-6008 compatible with HP iPAQ 210, and appropriate API drivers available?

Hi SVO,

The NI-DAQmx Base 3.0 driver supports USB-600x devices and is available for PDA use. However, according to HP’s website, the iPAQ 210 ships with Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 Classic Edition. The current version of the driver is only officially supported on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5. However, you might be able to get this driver working on Windows Mobile 6.0.

To use a USB device, the PDA must have USB hosting capabilities as it must act as the master USB device. Currently, few PDAs have this capability. We have successfully tested the following USB host devices with NI-DAQmx Base:

  • Toshiba e750 (Pocket PC 2003)
  • Acer n30 (Pocket PC 2003 2nd edition)
  • Acer n300 (Windows Mobile 5)
  • TPC-2006 (WinCE)
  • Archer Ultra-Rugged PDA (Windows Mobile 5)

Please post back if you have any more questions. Have a great weekend!

Hi teresaa-

The difference between USB Host and USB Client is an important one.  Any PDA that can be docked to a PC running Windows in order to transfer files and settings is acting as a "USB Client" to the PC system.  Most current PDAs have this capability.  The ability of the PDA USB port to act as a USB Host (i.e. to be able to use other peripherals with the PDA directly) is a somewhat more rare feature.

Most PDAs will clearly document whether the USB port is capable of acting as a USB Host, and what level of bandwidth that host port might provide (usually "full speed" USB 1.1 or "high speed" USB 2.0).  We (NI R&D) have not tested with more recent Toshiba PDAs than the E750 mentioned in Ryan's post, but these two newer devices have worked well recently in our testing:

Juniper Systems Archer Ultra Rugged Field PC
Amrel DA05M

We can not guarantee that every PDA device with USB Host capabilities will work due to the variance in USB support in different builds of Windows Mobile 5.0 / PocketPC 2003, but the USB-6008 is a relatively simple device that has worked reliably on all of the USB Host-capable PDAs I have tested it with.  If you have a specific PDA in mind, my best advice would be to confirm with the manufacturer that it supports USB Host capabilities and then ask that manufacturer for a temporary equipment loan to test with LabVIEW PDA and NI-DAQmx Base.

Hopefully this helps-
