MAX does not display any devices or software in XP

I installed labview 7 and the new ni-daq 7 drivers on a new installation of xp. I have administration rights and encountered no errors during the process. Three NI cards are installed in the system, 2xPCI-6024E and 1xPCI6713. They were succesfully detected by XP and the drivers installed. All the devices can be seen under the device manager without any conflicts. The first time MAX was run the devices were shown. However, on running MAX again no devices are shown. Clicking to expand the 'devices and interfaces' or 'software' tab does not expand the tree to display anything, even after refreshing the display. To try and correct the error the whole of labview and ni-daq 7 was uninstalled, then labview 7 was reinstalled, t
his time using the updated ni-daq 7.1 drivers but to the same effect.
In a knowledge-base post (2X1HHH5B) it mentioned that two driver services should be running for DAQ-mx; nipxirmu and nidevldu. On checking this nipxirmu has been started after xp boots but nidevldu has not. Attempting to manually start nidevldu as detailed in the knowledge-base post fails, giving 'error 1067'.

Apologies for the long post, hope you can help!

Hey Pete,

I am sorry you are having problems with MAX. Have you tried installing 7.1 on a different computer to see if it is something wrong with this machines OS. Here is a little process that I follow when MAX is having problems with the Windows configuration.

Pull up Task Manager and look for any NIMAX.EXE processes and terminate them. Then try opening MAX, and if this solves the problem then you can ignore the rest of these steps.

Reset the NI-DAQmx Configuration
-Tools>>NI-DAQmx Configuration>>Reset NI-DAQmx Configuration

Close MAX and Terminate the nidevldu service (and nipxirmu on PXI controllers).
-Go to Control Panel>>Administrative Tools>>Services - find and stop the nidevldu (nipxirmu) service.

Terminate any National Instruments Appli
cations and processes.
-Open up Task Manager and look primarily for the NIMAX.EXE and nipalsm processes. These are the most common tasks that will need to be terminated even after all the applications have been closed.

Delete all MAX data files - Warning: this step will delete all NI-DAQmx virtual channels and SCXI chasses - but it won't affect any of the traditional DAQ configuration.

Go to ..\National Instruments\MAX\Data\ and delete all of the files in this directory.

Restart the nidevldu (nipxirmu) service from the services control panel.

This service can be restarted from the same place that it was stopped. Verify that all the files we deleted from the ..\MAX\Data folder are created again after restarting the service

Restart MAX and see if this fixed the issue.

If this doesn't solve the problem, then the next step will depend on the situation. It is likely that the NI-DAQmx driver is probably corrupted and will need to be reinstalled or your OS registry is c
orrupt.

I hope this helps out.

Joshua P.
