NI 9214 as stand alone?

Solved!
Go to solution

Hello everybody,

my name is Michael, I'm a student with little to no experience with data aquisition who has been given the task to figure out, which type of connector/adapter is required to directly connect a NI 9214 (for thermocouples only) to a computer via USB. Now, after doing some online research, I am not sure anymore, if a direct connection between the NI 9214 and a computer is even possible. I have attached a picture of the module, could anyone tell me, if it is possible to use the NI 9214 without chassis and if so, which type of adapter do I have to use?

Thank you very much,

Michael

P.S.: I'm sorry if I chose the wrong category.IMG_20180730_1623591~2.jpgIMG_20180730_1624132.jpgIMG_20180730_1624299.jpg

The NI 9214 is a module that goes into a CompactDAQ or CompactRIO chassis. That 15-pin connector on the back of the module is what plugs into the chassis backplane.

If you want to connect it up via USB, and you only have a single module, I would recommend the cDAQ-9171 single-slot USB chassis.

(If you have multiple modules, there's also the 4-slot cDAQ-9174, 8-slot cDAQ-9178, and 14-slot cDAQ-9179, but if you only need a single 9214 those are overkill for your application.)

Thanks for the very fast reply and the recommandations!
So to be absolutely clear: There is no way, the NI 9214 can be used without some sort of chassis between the module and a pc?
(If I'm coming across a bit slow on the uptake, it's just because I have to be 100% sure before I tell my supervisor that there has to be  a chassis somewhere in the building. )
Thank you.

The only approach I can support is to use a USB CompactDAQ chassis such as the 9171. (The details on the signalling protocol for the NI 9214 are not documented.) The way you've described, it sounds like you may already have one at your institution.

Allright. I am impressed about how good the support section works here, thank you very much.
